E-mail marketing is a popular form of online marketing and a staggering 205 billion emails sent/received during the last calendar year. If you get it right e-mail marketing can provide huge returns for your business. However, with so much misinformation out there it can be confusing figuring out what principles should be followed. Here are some of the top myths to avoid:
- An e-mail can only be sent once: it’s a myth that you can only send an e-mail once. You need to get as much mileage out of the quality e-mails that you have written. It is possible to send out an e-mail a second or third time to those who have not opened the initial one. Just change the subject line and you should get a few more opens that you didn’t the first time around.
- Keep e-mails short: this is another myth that you shouldn’t follow. The idea behind this myth is that people have short attention spans online so you need to be concise and to the point. However, if the quality of your content within the email is great and you are engaging your audience then there is no reason why a longer e-mail shouldn’t be sent out.
- Unsubscribes are bad for business: the contrary is true to this myth. If a person unsubscribes from your list, then you are simply getting rid of someone who wasn’t going to buy from you anyway.
- Tuesday is the best day to send marketing emails: when you look to assess this one the brain might go a little something like this… “It wouldn’t be Monday, because people are getting into work and catching up. It wouldn’t be Friday, because people are getting ready for the weekend. Wednesday and Thursday, people are already in full swing and probably focused on work. So, it must be Tuesday.” Forget this thought immediately and research, when does my target audience check their email. Some industries may do best late at night on weekends depending on what they are promoting and some Sundays and Mondays.
Not a myth: Email marketing is incredibly valuable. It’s powerful, cheap and easy to implement. However, there is a lot of advice out there that can put you in a box where your marketing message does not belong. Each and every email and promotion deserves it own research and explanation as to how it is treated. That is why it is important to test and know your audience FIRST.
